There’s a type of bath we don’t talk about openly. Not because it’s wrong, but because it’s strategic. The Half Body. Also known as the ID Wash.

This is not a full commitment. This is a quick turn bath. You’re not going to work. You’re not seeing elders. You’re just going to the spaza.

But South Africa is small. You will bump into someone you know. Possibly someone who owes you money. Possibly someone who goes to the same church as your Magriza.

So you wash accordingly.

Only the areas that appear on an ID photo. Face. Neck. Upper body. Armpits get priority. Always.

The orange sack and the grey exfoliation rock sit this one out on the bench. This is not their moment. They’re heavy-duty tools. This is a “just for now” situation.

You don’t even close the bathroom door properly. The water is lukewarm. The soap application is respectful but rushed. No legs. No feet. Absolutely no heels.

Those are tomorrow’s problems. You come out feeling… acceptable. Not clean-clean. But socially compliant. You spray something light.

Nothing ambitious. You’re not trying to make an impression. You’re trying to pass unnoticed.

And when you’re back home ten minutes later, plastic bag in hand, you tell yourself, “I’ll bath properly later.”

Later never comes. Because the Half Body wasn’t about hygiene.

It was about dignity.
